Blessed Mother Teresa's Relics |
|
'Surprise
visit from Mother' |
|
An unexpected visit
from one’s mother can be cause for alarm. That is,
unless the woman is Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta.
Relics of the humanitarian foundress of the Missionaries
of Charity and candidate for sainthood made an
unexpected stop in the Diocese of Gary July 17. Joined
by priests of the diocese, Bishop Dale J. Melczek
celebrated Mass at St. Mark Church, where he blessed the
relics — a lock of Blessed Teresa’s hair, blood, a
rosary, crucifix, and her sandals.
Although Missionaries
of Charity sisters do not grant interviews, Sister
Marcella, the order’s regional superior, did describe
the stop in Gary as a “surprise visit from our Mother.”

Catholic radio host prepares MP3 players for troops,
wounded soldiers
|
When
her daughter Kate was born with
a complex set of significant
disabilities known as CHARGE
syndrome, Peg Kolm believed that
the only things the church had
to offer her could be summarized
by the "three B's -- they would
baptize her, they would bury her
and they would put us at the
back of the church."

It
has been a year in the making, but the first 1,000 MP3 players prepared by the
host of a Catholic radio program are making their way to Catholic troops and
wounded soldiers. They're not just any MP3 players, though. They're "filled with
Catholic content," according to Cheri Lomonte, host of the Gabriel Award-winning
radio program "Mary's Touch" and the force behind a project she calls "Frontline
Faith."

Where
is the intersection
of faith and economics? |

What is
Catholic identity?
|

How does growing older change your perspective? |
|
As the U.S. and global economies continue their
slow recoveries, this month's edition of Viewpoints looks at the intersection of
faith and economics. Tom Sheridan, former editor of the Catholic New World,
newspaper of the Archdiocese of Chicago, and a deacon ordained for the Diocese
of Joliet, Ill., says that while major corporations are global economic engines,
when they dodge their responsibility to pay taxes and manipulate markets,
governments lose the ability to fund services and financial systems break down.

In recent years, the Catholic identity of some
organizations has been questioned. But what is Catholic identity? In this
edition of Viewpoints, Liz Quirin, editor of The Messenger, newspaper of the
Diocese of Belleville, Ill., says Catholic identity must be more than
structure or institution; it must ground us, give direction to our lives as
we live out our faith in this world.

Morality is a timeless issue for humanity.
Every culture at every time has wrestled with it. Tom Sheridan says
the church shows us both what are the things we shouldn't do and the actions
we should take in order to be a moral person; he says the emphasis should be
on the latter.
