Prayer to Patron Saint

Dear (Name of Saint):
You lived a blessed life devoted to making the world a more divine place. Help me to see the truth of God's teachings with every breath I take.  Share with me your wisdom, compassion and love of all things good.  Give me courage to follow the way of Christ and never lose my belief in the power of His miracles.  Guide my steps so they lead directly to God, and use your heavenly influence to keep me in God's goodness and mercy until the day we meet in everlasting eternal life!
I lovingly give myself into your care.  Amen.

Joan of Arc
May 30
1412-1431

Joan was an ordinary French country girl, about thirteen years old.  She was at home, in the garden, when the local church bell began to ring.  it ws then she first heard the voices.  They seemed to come from a blaze of light.  At first, she was frightened, but then she became convinced they were angel voices.  One wa the archangel Michael.  He seemed to be saying she must become a soldier and help the dauphin win the war against the English.
"Dauphin" was the title given to teh eldest son ofthe king of France.  At that time, the old king had died but his son, Charles, had not yet been crowned.  He was still called the dauphin and he hadn't much idea how to defeat the Englist.  Years before, they'd invade northern France and were ruling it as if it was their own country.
Back in the village of Domremy, whenever the church bell rang, young Joan heard her voices.  Again and again, Saint Michael seemed to speak to her.  So too did other voices whom she believed to be Saint Catherine and Saint Margaret.
But what could a farmer's daughter do about winning a war?  So she did nothing.  Time passed, but the voices did not stop.  She told her priest and some friends about them, and some believed her, but most did not.  She became more and more convinced she must do something.
At last she got an opportuity.  She was away from home staying with aunt, and one day, she managed to slip away and see the local nobleman, Robert de Baudricourt.
"My name is Joan," she said to him.  "I come from the village of Domremy and I have been told to sae France from the English, so please would you help me -- would you give me some soldier's clothing and a horse and help me get to the kings?"
   "Who sent you?" he asked.
"The king of heaven," relied Joan.
"Why on earth should I believe you?"
"Because our amy is about to be defeated again,"
Soon after news came of the defeat.  Robert de Baudricourt was impressed.  He arranged for Joan to go to the dauphin.  It wouldn't be an easy journey for the countryside was full of robbers and rough soldiers.  So Joan had to cut her hair very short, and she wore a young man's tunic and was given two soldiers to act as her guardians.
The dauphin was staying at a castle at a place naemd Chinon.  He had arranged a trick to discover what sort of person Joan was.  A crowd of courtiers gathered in a room lit only by candles.  One of the noblemen pretended to be the dauphin while Charles hid among the crowd.  Joan went straight to the real dauphin and started to persuade him any way she could to rescue the city of Orleans.  It was being besieged by the English and part of the French army was trapped inside its walls.
The dauphin agreed she could try.  She was given a suit of white soldier's clothing, some soldiers, servants, and a anner on which was written "For Jesus and Mary."  When they reached Orleans, she met the commander of the part of the French army that wasn't trapped in the city.
This gruff commander, whose name was Dunios, explained how the English army was surrounding the city on three sides.  On the fourth side was a river.  So how could the French soldiers be rescued from the city?
"Simple," said Joan.  "We get boats, cross the river and save them."
"I've got boats," said Dunois.  "And rafts.  But the wind's blowing the wrong way.  See?  They can't get across it."
When she got back, the wind had inded changed.  The boats crossed the river, and the two parts of the French army were able to link up and save Orleans.
Under her leadership, the Frenchhad more victories against the English.  At last it was time for the dauphin to be crowned king of Fance.  Teh coronation took place in the cathedral at a place named Rheims.  Joan herself was tehre, standing just behind the throne and dressed in her soldier's clothing.
Plenty of people questioned why a peasant girl should stand in such an important spot, but nobody dared to object.  After all, without her leadership, there would have been no victories and no coronation.

Calendar of Saint's Days
Saints are usually remembered on the anniversary of their death.  The Eastern and Western Churches do not always remember saints on the same dates.  Unless otherwise designated, days shown are universal.  Days of remembrance may also vary and be moved in certain years so they do not coincide with Easter or other major festival.  The Roman Catholic Church has removed some saints from its calendar, but they are shown here on their traditional dates.
