Serving Multiple Parishes

‘It’s about who we are’

The ongoing shortage of priests in the U.S. Catholic Church has resulted in changes, with multiple-parish pastoring the most common solution. While one priest for two or more parishes poses challenges, it also sets the stage for personal and spiritual growth for clergy and laity alike.

Bishop Dale J. Melczek leads clergy in morning prayer prior to a priests' meeting at Ss. Peter and Paul, Merrillville, March 11. Standing beside the bishop are Fathers Terry Steffens and Rick Orlinski. (Tim Hunt photo)

SPECIAL COLUMNIST

Ben Ross is a seminarian of the Diocese of Gary. His monthly column now appears in the Northwest Indiana Catholic.  His eighth story: "
Intercessory prayer — participation in Jesus’ priesthood"
can be found in the February 21, 2010 print edition of the newspaper.  He writes:

"
Intercessory prayer is one way that the people of God participate in the priesthood of Jesus Christ, especially when they pray for and with their own parish priest. Their prayers merge with the priest's and together as one Body — Jesus and his Bride — they sanctify the world around them. To develop this image of bride and bridegroom, just as the husband helps his wife reach heaven and the wife helps her husband to the same, so, too, does the priest, in the person of Jesus Christ, help his parishioners and the parishioners help their priest obtain the eternal happiness of heaven.
